The Indian government has announced a 24% salary hike for Members of Parliament (MPs), effective from April 1, 2023. With this increase, the revised monthly salary for MPs is now ₹1,24,000, up from the previous ₹1,00,000. This adjustment is based on the Cost Inflation Index as specified under the Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954, and the Income Tax Act, 1961.
In addition to the base salary, MPs receive several allowances that contribute to their total payout:
- Daily Allowance: Increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per day, payable for attending Parliament sessions or committee meetings.
- Constituency Allowance: Raised from ₹70,000 to ₹87,000 per month.
- Office Expenses Allowance: Increased from ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 per month, which includes ₹50,000 for hiring a computer-literate assistant and ₹25,000 for stationery.
When combining the revised salary (₹1,24,000) with the constituency allowance (₹87,000) and office expenses allowance (₹75,000), the assured monthly income for an MP, excluding the daily allowance and one-time furniture allowances, is now ₹2,86,000. The daily allowance adds further income depending on the number of days they attend parliamentary sessions or meetings, and MPs are also entitled to additional perks like free accommodation, travel benefits, and a one-time furniture allowance (₹1,25,000 for durable and nondurable items combined).
