Ahead of the Chaitra Navratri festival beginning on March 30, 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has imposed a ban on the sale of meat within a 500-meter radius of religious places across the state. Additionally, all illegal slaughterhouses have been ordered to close.
On April 6, during the observance of Ram Navami, the government will enforce a complete prohibition on animal slaughter and meat sales throughout Uttar Pradesh.
To ensure compliance, Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, has directed all District Magistrates, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to implement these orders immediately. District-level committees, comprising officials from various departments, including police, pollution control, animal husbandry, transport, labor, health, and food safety, have been established to oversee the enforcement.
Violations of these directives will result in strict action under the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act of 1959 and the Food Safety Acts of 2006 and 2011.
These measures are part of the state’s efforts to respect religious sentiments during significant festivals and maintain public order.
