Bangladesh Aide’s Controversial Social Media Post

Recent developments have strained India-Bangladesh relations due to provocative statements from members of Bangladesh’s interim government. Mahfuj Alam, a close aide to interim leader Muhammad Yunus, posted a now-deleted message on social media suggesting that Indian territories such as West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura are part of Bangladesh.
Deleted Post Sparks Outrage in India
This post, which included a controversial map, was made on December 16, coinciding with Bangladesh’s Victory Day. The move sparked a major outcry, with Indian authorities taking swift action.
India’s Strong Protest to Bangladesh
In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) lodged a strong protest with Bangladesh. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the need for responsible public commentary, stating, “We have registered our strong protest on this issue with the Bangladesh side… We would like to remind all concerned to be mindful of their public comments.”
Yunus Calls for National Unity Against India
Furthermore, Muhammad Yunus has called for national unity in Bangladesh to counter what he describes as “Indian aggression.” He accused India of spreading misinformation and undermining Bangladesh’s new administration. Yunus urged political parties to set aside differences and present a united front against these challenges, describing the situation as “a question of our existence.”
Rising Tensions Between India and Bangladesh
These incidents have heightened tensions between the two nations, especially following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the establishment of the interim government led by Yunus. India has expressed concerns over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh during this transitional period.
