India Overtakes Global Giants in Locomotive Production

India has indeed emerged as a global leader in locomotive manufacturing, surpassing both Europe and the United States in production volume. In the financial year 2024-25, India manufactured a record-breaking 1,681 locomotives, a 19% increase from the 1,472 units produced in the previous fiscal year (2023-24). This milestone has positioned India ahead of major regions like Europe, the US, South America, Africa, and Australia in total locomotive output, highlighting its growing dominance in the global railway sector.
“Make in India” Fuels Manufacturing Boom
This surge in production is largely attributed to the “Make in India” initiative, which has bolstered domestic manufacturing capabilities. Between 2004 and 2014, India produced 4,695 locomotives, averaging 470 per year. In contrast, from 2014 to 2024, production soared to 9,168 units, nearly doubling the annual average to approximately 917. The 2024-25 output alone underscores this upward trajectory, with key manufacturing units contributing significantly: Chittaranjan Locomotive Works produced 700 locomotives, Banaras Locomotive Works 477, Patiala Locomotive Works 304, and the Madhepura and Marhowrah units in Bihar each delivered 100.
Freight Locomotives Drive Production Surge
A major focus has been on freight locomotives, with 1,047 of the total being WAG-9/9H models—high-power, three-phase AC electric locomotives designed for heavy-duty freight operations. Other models included 148 WAG-9 Twin locomotives, 100 WAG-12B, 100 WDG 4G/6G, 272 WAP-7, 2 WAP-5, and 5 NRC locomotives, showcasing a diverse and robust manufacturing capacity.
From Importer to Exporter: India’s Railway Revolution
India’s rise isn’t just about numbers; it reflects a strategic shift toward self-reliance and global competitiveness. The country has transitioned from importing locomotives to producing world-class units, some of which are now being exported. This achievement, reported widely as of April 2, 2025, marks a significant leap in India’s industrial prowess, driven by both policy and infrastructure advancements.
