
The Maho-Omanthai railway line upgrade, supported by India with $91.27 million, enhances connectivity between Sri Lanka’s northern region and Colombo, facilitating transportation and economic activities. Additionally, the advanced signaling system for the Maho-Anuradhapura section, funded by a $14.9 million Indian grant, aims to improve train operations’ safety and efficiency.
Earlier in the day, both leaders visited the Jaya Shri Mahabodhi Temple in Anuradhapura, home to a sacred Bodhi tree believed to have originated from a sapling brought from India by Theri Sanghamitta, daughter of Emperor Ashoka. This visit underscores the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka.
These developments are part of Prime Minister Modi’s three-day visit to Sri Lanka, during which he and President Dissanayake have engaged in extensive discussions to strengthen bilateral relations. Notably, President Dissanayake assured that Sri Lanka would not allow its territory to be used in any manner detrimental to India’s security interests.
