President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5, 2025, officially making it a law. This followed its passage in both houses of Parliament earlier that week, with the Lok Sabha approving it on April 3 and the Rajya Sabha on April 4 after extensive debates. The new law aims to reform the management of waqf properties in India, introducing measures to enhance transparency, governance, and efficiency. However, it has sparked significant controversy, with opposition parties and some Muslim organizations labeling it as unconstitutional and discriminatory, while the government defends it as a step toward inclusivity and accountability. Legal challenges have already been filed in the Supreme Court contesting its validity.
