In a big twist in Tamil Nadu politics, AIADMK and BJP have come together to form an alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed the deal, with AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) taking the lead for the alliance.
This marks a major shift from the 2024 general elections when both parties went solo and faced a tough time. The AIADMK-led alliance, which included smaller parties like DMDK and SDPI, couldn’t bag any seats. The BJP’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) didn’t fare much better in Tamil Nadu, also failing to win a single seat.
After the 2024 elections, AIADMK pulled away from the BJP-led NDA but has now decided to reunite. The idea is to consolidate anti-DMK votes and challenge the current ruling party, DMK, in 2026.
The elections will be held in April-May 2026, with all 234 seats up for grabs. How successful this alliance will be depends on how well they manage seat-sharing and what voters think closer to the election. The DMK, which is in power right now, isn’t exactly thrilled about this alliance and has already dubbed it an “alliance of defeat.”
