West Bengal witnessed a wave of violence during Ram Navami celebrations as clashes erupted in several districts, leaving multiple people injured and properties damaged. The attacks have ignited a political firestorm, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi exchanging sharp criticisms over the handling of the situation.
Violence During Ram Navami Processions
Reports indicate that violence broke out in areas like Howrah, Murshidabad, and Hooghly, where miscreants allegedly attacked Hindu processions. Eyewitnesses claim that stones were pelted, vehicles were set on fire, and shops were vandalized, creating a state of panic among devotees.
Local authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the affected regions to curb further escalation. Police forces were deployed, and several arrests have been made in connection with the violence.
Mamata Banerjee Blames ‘Outsiders’ and BJP
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the violence, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had orchestrated the unrest to destabilize the state. She claimed that “outsiders” had infiltrated the Ram Navami processions to incite riots and disrupt communal harmony.
“Bengal is a land of peace, but some political forces are trying to spread hate for their electoral gains. We will not allow this,” Banerjee stated during a public address. She has also directed law enforcement to take strict action against those responsible, regardless of their political affiliation.
PM Modi Calls for Justice, Targets TMC Government
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh, strongly criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for failing to protect Hindus during religious festivals. He accused the state administration of appeasement politics and neglecting the safety of Hindu devotees.
“In West Bengal, Ram Navami processions are attacked, but the state government remains silent. This is a clear example of their anti-Hindu mindset,” PM Modi said. He further assured that the central government would take necessary steps to ensure justice for the victims.
Political and Public Reactions
The violence has triggered widespread protests from Hindu organizations and BJP supporters across the state. Several right-wing groups have demanded immediate action against the perpetrators and called for a statewide bandh to protest against the attacks.
On the other hand, opposition parties have accused both TMC and BJP of using religious sentiments for political gains ahead of the upcoming elections.
What’s Next?
With tensions running high, security forces remain on high alert across West Bengal. The upcoming days will be crucial in determining whether the violence will escalate further or if peace can be restored through political and administrative interventions.
