New Delhi – In a move not seen since the 1971 Indo-Pak War, the Indian government has ordered comprehensive security drills across the nation, signaling heightened vigilance amid escalating regional tensions.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, issued an urgent directive to state governments, armed forces, paramilitary units, and disaster response agencies to conduct full-spectrum preparedness drills over the next 72 hours.
Why Now?
Sources within the security establishment say the decision was triggered by a string of high-risk developments:
- Terror infiltration attempts in Jammu & Kashmir
- Pakistani accusations and misinformation campaigns at the UN
- The capture of Mangochar by Baloch rebels, which has exposed Pakistan’s internal instability
- Cyber intelligence chatter indicating possible cross-border provocations
“This is not panic—it’s preparation. We’re not waiting to react anymore,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity.
What’s Included in the Drill?
This is not a routine mock drill. The exercises will involve:
- Simulated air raid sirens in select border towns
- Metro shutdown rehearsals in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru
- Rapid response mock attacks in coastal areas and naval ports
- Cyber defense protocols across critical infrastructure
- Community-level civil defense awareness sessions
The drills are designed to test India’s multi-tiered response system across land, air, sea, and digital domains.
🇮🇳 Civil Participation Urged
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the nation, asking citizens to remain calm but alert, and to actively participate in civil defense activities.
“The drills are preventive, not predictive. There is no immediate threat to the public, but India must be prepared at every level.”
The government also launched a nationwide public awareness campaign via TV, social media, and mobile alerts to educate people on emergency protocols.
Opposition, Analysts React
While opposition leaders welcomed the precautionary move, some questioned the timing.
“Preparedness is good. But the government must also ensure transparency and avoid fueling fear,” said Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate.
Defense analysts, however, view the drills as a strategic message to both adversaries and allies that India won’t be caught off-guard.
“This is India’s way of saying: We remember Kargil. We remember 26/11. Never again,” remarked Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain.
Global Implications
International observers see this as a clear warning to Pakistan and China, especially after India’s growing assertiveness in diplomatic and military circles. Intelligence-sharing with allies like the U.S., France, and Japan has also reportedly intensified in the past 48 hours.
