Massive protests have broken out across Bangladesh, as thousands take to the streets in a fiery backlash against proposed women’s rights reforms introduced by the government. What was intended to be a progressive leap forward has instead ignited deep divisions and sparked fears of cultural overreach.
At the heart of the unrest are new legal provisions aimed at giving women equal inheritance rights, along with greater protections against workplace discrimination and domestic violence. But conservative groups say the reforms “clash with religious values” and have vowed to resist what they call “Western interference” in local traditions.
Protesters—many waving flags, chanting slogans, and holding banners—have flooded cities like Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet, demanding the rollback of the reforms. Meanwhile, women’s rights activists are holding counter-demonstrations, standing firm in defense of the proposed changes.
The government remains caught in the crossfire, facing mounting pressure from both sides.
