Bridge Collapse in Vadodara Sends Shockwaves Across Gujarat
In a horrifying incident, a bridge over the Mahi River in Vadodara, Gujarat collapsed on Tuesday evening, sending multiple vehicles plunging into the water below. The tragic event occurred around 5:20 PM during peak traffic hours, causing widespread panic and raising serious questions about infrastructure safety in the region.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud cracking sound moments before a large section of the bridge gave way, dragging several cars and bikes into the river.
Rescue Ops Underway, Casualties Feared
- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local rescue teams rushed to the site within 30 minutes.
- As of latest reports, at least 4 vehicles have been pulled out of the river.
- Divers and cranes are being used in the intensive search and rescue operation, which is ongoing despite difficult currents.
- Local authorities have confirmed 3 injuries, while casualties are feared as rescue work continues overnight.
“It was like an earthquake. The bridge just split and the vehicles disappeared into the river,” said Ramesh Patel, a survivor who narrowly escaped.
Bridge Was a Key Link for Daily Commuters
The collapsed bridge connected Dabhoi Road to central Vadodara and was used by thousands of commuters daily, including school buses, private cars, and two-wheelers. Initial reports suggest that the structure may have been over 40 years old, and there are allegations of pending repair work flagged in past audit reports.
Possible Causes: Poor Maintenance or Heavy Rains?
Authorities have launched a high-level probe into the cause of the collapse. Early theories point to:
- Structural fatigue due to aging and lack of maintenance.
- Recent heavy monsoon rains which may have weakened the foundation.
- Possible overloading and negligence in timely inspections.
Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel has ordered a full inquiry and promised “strict action against any official negligence.”
Political Reactions & Public Outrage
The incident has sparked fury across social media, with many users calling out the “bridge collapse epidemic” across Indian states. Opposition parties have demanded accountability and immediate compensation for the victims.
The Chief Minister has announced:
